No City Garbage Collection on Friday

Posted: 01/08/2010
There will be no city garbage collection today due to icy road conditions in most of Knoxville's neighborhoods. Waste Connections is the city's household garbage contractor.

"We talked with them this morning," said David Brace, deputy director of the city's Public Service Department, "and due to the slick conditions on neighborhood streets and with children being out of school today and playing on or along those streets we decided not to collect residential garbage today."

Brace said that Public Service and Waste Connections will re-evaluate conditions this evening. He said in all likelihood garbage pickup will resume on Monday with Waste Connections extending their work hours on Monday and Tuesday to make up for Friday's missed collections.

The city's Solid Waste Management Facility, which includes the City's Garbage Transfer Station and its Household Hazardous Waste, opened late this morning but is now open for customers.

City Public Service Crews worked through the night Thursday and into Friday morning salting and clearing the city's main streets and responding to requests from the Knoxville Police and Fire Departments. The heaviest work took place between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., Thursday night and from 2 a.m. until 8 a.m. this morning.

City crews used 945 tons of salt and 4,050 gallons of liquid calcium trying to keep the city's main routes - and roads near medical facilities - clear during Thursday's commute home and into the evening and this morning before people began driving into work.
