Hill Avenue Viaduct Closed for a Month

Posted: 09/09/2010
The Hill Avenue Viaduct will be closed beginning Monday, September 13, until October 13, so crews can place a new concrete surface on the bridge that crosses over James White Parkway from State Street to Hall of Fame Drive.

The closing is part of an ongoing $1.14 million renovation project on the viaduct started earlier this summer after it received "poor" ratings from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The City was also concerned that if the rehab project was delayed and the viaduct continued to deteriorate that the costs of repairing it would increase significantly.

The capital project is being directed by the City of Knoxville's Engineering Department and is being paid for with city funds.

Bell & Associates Construction is the contractor and crews have been removing the asphalt surface and doing structural repair since June. Following the bridge's closure next week they will begin placing a more durable concrete surface on the viaduct.
