Phone book recycling campaign begins

 Mayor Bill Haslam kicked off this year's phone book recycling contest today by recognizing pupils who designed winning posters to promote the campaign and their teachers.

"This campaign serves to divert roughly 130 tons of phone books from landfills while at the same time helping to develop life-long awareness of the benefits and ease of recycling among our youth," Mayor Haslam said.

Winners of the poster contest are:


Mayor presented the students with checks for $50 each and their teachers $125 each for use in their classrooms. Schools that collect the most books are also eligible for cash prizes. Four winners will be named among elementary schools, three among middle schools and one high school.Schools will begin collections as BellSouth delivers new books. The last day for books to be collected for the contest is Jan. 27, 2006.Businesses who wish to donate books to specific schools may still take their books directly to Knox Recycled Fiber, located at 1323 Proctor St. Please call Clark Lindsey at 522-6129 between 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to make drop-off arrangements.Participating sponsors are the City of Knoxville, Knox County, SP Recycling, and Rock-Tenn Recycling.
