New Sidewalk Segment Gives Veterans Access to Bus Stops, VA Outpatient Clinic

The new sidewalk connection on Ray Mears Boulevard allows veterans to walk a safe, accessible route from Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) bus stops on the heavily used KAT bus route 11 to the Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic.

The project was directly requested by staff at the Veterans Affairs office.

Construction included approximately 800 linear feet of sidewalk, as well as a crosswalk with pedestrian signals. These new pieces of pedestrian infrastructure provide an accessible route to the bus stops on either side of Ray Mears Boulevard (the KAT buses pick up in both eastbound and westbound directions).

KAT bus route 11 services the Kingston Pike corridor, averaging 32,358 passenger trips per month.

The segment of sidewalk also completes a pedestrian link from Downtown West Blvd to West Town Mall, forming a pedestrian link for numerous businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, a hotel, medical offices, a grocery store, and the Regal Downtown West 8 theater.

The scope of the sidewalk was designed in-house by the City Engineering Department. Design and Construction Services, Inc. completed construction of the $177,500 project.
