2017 Holiday Schedules for City Services

Posted: 12/18/2017

City of Knoxville offices will be closed Monday, Dec. 25, 2017 for the Christmas holiday and Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, for New Year’s Day.

Waste Connections, the City's household garbage and recycling hauler, will also be closed on Monday, Dec. 25, 2017 and garbage and recycling will not be collected that day. Residential and downtown collections typically scheduled for Monday collection will resume Tuesday, and the collection schedule will offset by one day for the remainder of the week.

Though garbage and recycling will be collected on Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, the Waste Connections offices will be closed. (The only holidays on which Waste Connections does not pick up are Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.)

For tips on how to prevent waste by recycling or donating gently used items during this giving season, please visit www.knoxvilletn.gov/garbage.

Following the Christmas holiday, properly bagged excess holiday household trash and broken-down cardboard set next to full garbage carts will be picked up – a one-time exception to the requirement that all bags be placed inside carts. Residents will need to have garbage and recycling containers out for pickup before 7 a.m. on their holiday-week pickup day.

The City's recycling centers will be open for recycling drop-offs, but the Goodwill attendant will only be available for donations of household goods for a half-day (until 1 p.m.) on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017. The center will be unstaffed but open for recycling drop-off on Monday, Dec. 25, 2017 and Monday, Jan. 1, 2018.

The City's Solid Waste Management Facility, 1033 Elm St., will be closed from Saturday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Dec. 25, with normal hours resuming on Tuesday, Dec. 26. For the New Year’s holiday, the facility will be closed from Saturday, Dec. 30, through Monday, Jan. 1, with normal hours resuming Tuesday, Jan. 2.

“Free for City Residents” at the Solid Waste Management Facility will be offered on Jan. 6, 2018, the first Saturday of the month. This service is for City of Knoxville residents only – please, no contractors and no shingles.

Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) will also be operating on holiday schedules. On Sunday, Dec. 24, KAT administrative offices and the Knoxville Station Customer Service Counter will be closed, but buses will operate on regular Sunday schedules. There will be no KAT service on Monday, Dec. 25. Regular service will resume on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

Likewise, regular bus services will run on Sunday, Dec. 31, but the KAT administrative offices and Knoxville Station Customer Service Counter will be closed. All services will be closed on Monday, Jan. 1, and resume on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
