Mayor Names Avice Reid as Sr. Director of Community Relations

Posted: 01/19/2016
Avice ReidMayor Madeline Rogero today named Dr. Avice E. Reid as the City of Knoxville’s Senior Director of Community Relations. In that role, Reid will supervise community engagement efforts including the City’s Save Our Sons initiative, the Police Advisory and Review Committee (PARC), and the Equal Business Opportunity Program, among other responsibilities.

Reid, a Knoxville native and graduate of Knoxville College, joined the City in 2007 as Executive Director of PARC, which provides independent review of police actions, in response to citizen complaints. Prior to that, she spent 34 years at the Tennessee Valley Authority in roles including Senior Project Manager and Senior Manager of Information Technology.

Reid has a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Knoxville College and a Master’s and Doctorate of Ministry from Covington Theological Seminary. She has served as a director or board member of organizations including Leadership Knoxville, Home Federal Bank of Tennessee, the United Way of Greater Knoxville, the YWCA of Knoxville and the East Tennessee Foundation.

“Through her work with PARC and her extensive service with local nonprofits and the private sector, Avice has her finger on the pulse of community concerns and conversation,” Mayor Rogero said. “In her new role, she will have a broader mandate as community liaison for my administration.”

Reid will be a member of Mayor Rogero’s Cabinet and will represent the mayor on numerous local boards, including that of the Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee.  She will ensure compliance with federal Title VI and equal employment requirements.

“I look forward to working with community members and groups to make sure City services and resources are accessible to all,” Reid said.

Reid will begin her new position on Feb. 1. She replaces Thomas “Tank” Strickland, who is retiring at the end of January.
