Pilot CrossKnox Race Set for Oct. 28

Posted: 10/11/2012
The City of Knoxville and the Knoxville Track Club will host the Sixth Annual Pilot CrossKnox 10-Miler and 4-Mile Walk at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28th.

The race, sponsored by Pilot, is run on City greenways beginning at the Alex Haley Statue in Morningside Park in East Knoxville and finishing 10 miles later at Bearden Elementary School in West Knoxville.

The City's Parks and Recreation Department established the race in 2007 to highlight Knoxville's Greenway System, particularly the connection from east to west across Knoxville. Participants are transported by bus back to Morningside Park for the post-race party.

"The CrossKnox race has proved to be a fun way for citizens to learn about the options of our greenway system," said Joe Walsh, Knoxville Parks and Recreation Director. "During the years the race has become a fall season tradition in Knoxville."

2012 marks the third year that the Knoxville Track Club has managed the race along with the city.

"We are excited about the growth of the Pilot CrossKnox 10-Miler," said Kristy Altman, the KTC's managing director. "We are seeing the participation numbers grow steadily and intend to make this a premier fall event for our community. We believe that the morning start time will allow for new personal records and we look forward to seeing everyone at the finish line."

There's also a four-mile walk that begins at the Alex Haley Statue that goes out and back on the same course.

The City has more than 60 miles of greenways throughout Knoxville including more than 16 miles of connected greenways off of the CrossKnox route. Included in this system are the Morningside, James White, Neyland, Second Creek, Third Creek, Sequoyah and Bearden Village greenways.

Mail-in registration must be postmarked no later than Thursday, Oct. 18th, 2012, but registration will still be available at packet pick-up on Friday, Oct. 26th, at Tyson Park from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and at Morningside Park from 6:30 -7:30 a.m. on race day.

Registration fees are $35 and participants will receive a long-sleeved synthetic stretch shirt.
