KUB Reports 260 Customers Without Power

Posted: 06/28/2011
Customers may experience brief, temporary power interruptions throughout the next few days while KUB brings other customers back in service. During this time, if your power remains off for more than 15 minutes, please call 524-2911 to report the interruption. Restoration Status KUB crews will continue working around the clock to restore power to its customers who are still without service due to storms last Tuesday (June 21) and Friday (June 24). At this time, approximately 260 customers remain without power. More than 127,000 customers were without power at the height of the June 21 storm, the largest outage in KUB's history. Outages from these two storms continue to be scattered throughout KUB's service area.

If you are currently experiencing a power outage, please call KUB at 524-2911.

Restoration Cost

Estimate KUB is estimating the restoration costs for the June 21 and June 24 storm events could exceed $4 million. By comparison, the Blizzard of 1993 and the storms of late April 2011 cost an estimated $2 million each.

Restoration Priority

Customers who have been without power the longest are receiving priority. Every job is different and the remaining work is both complex and time consuming. About 38 total jobs remained to be worked. Approximately 28 of those pending jobs are to restore service to only one customer per job; these single customer jobs can take from 15 minutes to 8 hours each to complete. A typical line job for the remaining 10 multiple customer jobs can take up 4 to 8 hours for repair and the jobs requiring a pole replacement take a minimum of 6 to 8 hours. KUB is advising customers who are currently without power to expect outages to continue into mid-week.

Customer Equipment Repairs

Customers who have damage to their electric service equipment should contact a qualified electrician to make repairs before KUB can reconnect the customer's electricity. In addition, the customer should contact KUB to lower the service line (at no charge to the customer) so the customer's contractor can safely perform the necessary work. For more information, visit www.kub.org and click on the link contained in the front page customer notice.

Routine KUB Activities Temporarily Suspended

KUB would like to remind its customers, due to the magnitude of these storm events, resources from all KUB departments are focusing on assisting with restoration efforts. As a result, responses to routine business inquiries may be temporarily delayed. KUB thanks customers for their patience.

Important Safety Message

Because of the large number of crews working on power restoration, including crews who are unfamiliar with our area, it is extremely important that they be able to focus on doing their work as safely as possible. The public is asked not to approach crews in the field while they are working. Customers with questions should call KUB at 524-2911. Customers are reminded to stay at least 25-feet from the work area for their safety and the safety of crews. This will help ensure everyone's safety and allow for more timely restoration.

Also, KUB would also like to remind customers that dig-ins to buried utilities can hurt people and damage property. As customers prepare to restore property from possible storm damage they may need to Call 811 three days before digging to have buried utility lines located and marked. It's a free service to the customer.

KUB advises customers to stay well away from any downed power lines as they may be energized. Also be mindful that trees leaning on power lines, utility poles, and related equipment can conduct electricity, and contact should be avoided. Trees and limbs on the ground may be in contact with energized power lines and may pose a threat as well.
