CrossKnox Race Oct. 16

Posted: 10/14/2011
The City of Knoxville and the Knoxville track Club will host the Fifth Annual Pilot CrossKnox 10-Miler and 5K Walk at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 16.

The race, sponsored by Pilot, is run on city greenways beginning at the Alex Haley Statue in Morningside Park in East Knoxville before finishing 10 miles later at Bearden Elementary School in West Knoxville.

The city's Parks and Recreation Department established the race in 2007 to highlight its greenways systems, particularly the connection from east to west across Knoxville. Participants are transported by bus back to Morningside Park for the post-race party.

"The CrossKnox race has proved to be a fun way for citizens to learn about the options of our greenway system," said Joe Walsh, Parks and Recreation Director. "Over the years the race has become a fall season tradition in Knoxville."

This marks the second year that the Knoxville Track Club has managed the race along with the city.

"We contacted Joe Walsh about the race because it is a natural fit," said Kristy Altman, the KTC's managing director. "It showcases our city's greenways and it's a unique format for people to run point-to-point, which we don't have otherwise on our event schedule."

There's also a 5K walk from the Alex Haley Statue to the Sunsphere.

The city has more than 50 miles of greenways throughout Knoxville including over 16 miles of connected greenways off of the CrossKnox route. Those include the Morningside, James White, Neyland, Second Creek, Third Creek, Sequoyah and Bearden Village greenways.

Registration is still open at the packet pick-up on Friday, October 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Tyson Park and at 12:30 p.m. in Morningside Park on race day.

Registration fees are $30 and participants receive a long-sleeved dri-fit shirt.
