Knoxville Parks and Recreation Kicks off May as Older Americans’ Month

Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department, along with seniors from senior community centers; Former Knoxville Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe will kick off May as Older Americans' Month on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Larry Cox Senior Center, 3109 Ocoee Trail. 

May is Older American's Month, and the Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department will be kicking it off today with seniors. Victor Ashe, Former Knoxville Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to Poland, will speak at the kickoff.

The Parks and Recreation Department has a variety of events lined up for Older American's Month, including:

APRIL 30--2:00 PM - Kick-off event @ Larry Cox Center. Former Mayor and Ambassador Victor Ashe is Guest Speaker. Entertainment by the Dixie Land Band. Light refreshments served. FINAL SIGN-UP IS APRIL 27TH

MAY 4--9:00 AM - Titanic Tour (Pigeon Forge) Cost= $18.00. Lunch on your own. FINAL SIGN UP DATE IS APRIL 23RD.

MAY 5TH--2:00 PM - Dr. Buchanan (from Knox County Health Dept.) will talk on Women's Health Issues at Northgate Terrace on Whittle Springs (wear red). FINAL SIGN UP DATE IS APRIL 29TH.

MAY 8TH--Sweetwater Flea Market Trip (specific locations only)

MAY 10TH--8:30 AM - Pigeon Forge Shopping Trip Cost= $2.00. Depart 8:30 AM, lunch on your own. FINAL SIGN UP DATE IS MAY 6TH.

MAY 15TH--6:00-8:00 PM - MARDI GRAS DANCE @ Cagle Terrace on Sutherland Ave. Cost=$3.00. Beads, music, dinner, parade, and FUN!!! King Cake!! Costume & mask contest. Wear purple, green and gold. FINAL SIGN UP DATE IS MAY 11.

MAY 20TH--11:00-2:00 PM - THE COVE PICNIC. Cost=$4.00 (for transportation & food: hot dogs, hamburgers, chips & drinks) Come & play "A Minute to Win It" for prizes!! FINAL SIGN UP DATE IS MAY 13TH.

MAY 24TH--TIME = TBA - Oak Ridge Museum of Science and Energy Behind the Scenes Tour. Cost=$3.00. Bring lunch or buses will stop at Ryan's or Big Ed's Pizza in Oak Ridge for lunch. Lunch on your own. FINAL SIGN UP DATE IS MAY 18TH.

MAY 27TH--6:00-8:00 PM - MUSIC IN THE COURTYARD @ LOVE TOWERS (open air). Cost= $2.00. FINAL SIGN UP DATE IS MAY 24TH.
