Lay's Meats Brand Returns to East Tennessee

Posted: 06/05/2008
Mayor Haslam along with Steve Smith - Pres. & CEO Food City, Tom Hembree - V.P. Marketing Food City, John Edd Wampler - Pres. Family Brands International, and John Ward - former U.T. sports announcer announced today that Food City is bringing Lay's Meats, an all-time regional favorite, back to life exclusively at its grocery stores.

The products will be made by the Wampler's Family Brands International in Lenoir City and will consist of the same recipes as Lay's did.

We're pleased that Food City and Family Brands have joined together to bring back a product that people have such fond memories of and we wish them the best in this partnership," said Mayor Haslam.

A complete line of sliced luncheon mats, bacon, ham, chili, sloppy joe, Three Pig Wieners, Touchdown Beef Franks, Quikstart Wieners, Ole Timer Sausage, Lay's Bologna and lard will be available.

Lay’s first opened their packing plant near downtown Knoxville on East Jackson Avenue in 1921. For the next several decades Lay’s pork products were very popular and were sold in groceries and markets in at least six southeastern states. This is a historical brand from Knoxville that people grew up with in East Tennessee and the surrounding area for years.

Lay's was also the official meat brand of the 1982 World's Fair.

Former U.T. Sports announcer John Ward was the spoken voice heard on Lay's Meats commercials.
