Lonsdale Cleanup Saturday

Posted: 04/11/2007
Mayor Bill Haslam will take part in the 2nd Annual Lonsdale United for Change cleanup on Saturday, April 14th. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with the cleanup part of it taking place from 10 a.m. until noon.A neighborhood block party, centered at the corner of Minnesota and Heiskell Streets, follows from noon until 2 p.m. The participants will meet at the Lonsdale United Methodist Church at 3002 Galbraith Road at 10 a.m. for a brief organizational meeting and to pick up equipment for the cleanup. "This is a wonderful event aimed at shining up a great neighborhood," Haslam said, "and I'm glad to be able to be part of it again this year.""Knoxville is really a city of neighborhoods and when you do something to make one stronger and better, like this event sponsored by Lonsdale United for Change does, you improve the entire city," Haslam added.James Allen, with Lonsdale United for Change, said about 300 people took part in last year's initial cleanup, which covered about six square miles of Lonsdale and they overfilled an industrial sized dumpster with trash."We're just trying to pick up as much trash and debris as we can," Allen said. "It's amazing some of the stuff you pick up."Allen said everyone is welcome to participate in the cleanup and celebration, not just people who live in Lonsdale."It's open to anybody, youth groups, whoever is interested in helping," Allen said.He said Lonsdale United for Change would provide trash bags, gloves, and other items for the cleanup. He said the group's slogan is "Reviving Knoxville's Most Forgotten Neighborhood" and they want to improve their neighborhood's image."We're trying to remarket the name Lonsdale," Allen said. "We want people to have a different perception of Lonsdale."The block party will feature live music, food and prizes.
