Mayor Bill Haslam hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to mark the completion of a sidewalk and crosswalk that makes walking to and from Fulton High School safer for students.

 "Sidewalks are not just concrete pathways - sidewalks connect neighbors and neighborhoods and they keep our children safe as they walk to school or play," Mayor Haslam said. "We're investing more than $1 million in building and repairing sidewalks this year, and sidewalks around school zones are a priority."


Mayor Haslam hosts the ribbon-cutting for the new sidewalk at Fulton High The City painted a crosswalk on Woodland Avenue adjacent to Fulton High and built a sidewalk on the south side of the street to make the route safer for students who walked to their homes and those students whose parents picked them up at the neighboring shopping center.The Oakwood-Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association and Knox County school officials had championed the project.

 "We appreciate the priority Mayor Haslam has given to sidewalks in and around school zones," said Dr. Charles Lindsey, Superintendent of Schools for Knox County. "Many of us do not recognize the importance well designed and maintained sidewalks until we send our children off to school using those sidewalks."Sidewalks are also planned on routes to and from Holston and Bearden Middle Schools and Austin-East and West High Schools. Those projects are expected to be completed by August.
