The City of Knoxville - a two-time winner of the national Cans for Cash recycling challenge - is asking for its citizens help in achieving this distinction for the third year in a row.

 Residents simply need to recycle aluminum cans at any City or Knox County recycling or convenience center between Sept. 15-30 to help the City win money that will be used to promote recycling. "The average American drinks 370 beverages from aluminum cans each year, and by recycling those cans that's a lot of waste we can keep out of landfills," Mayor Bill Haslam said. "Knoxville has won its category for the past two years, and we want to keep that streak going for a third year."

The cycle to turn cans from trash to something useful is among the fastest of any recyclable item - just 60 days from your recycling bin into new cans on store shelves.The Cans for Cash - City Recycling Challenge is a project of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Novelis Expand Aluminum Can Recycling.Residents may take their cans anytime - but are particularly encouraged to between Sept. 15-30 - to any of the City of Knoxville Recycling drop-off centers or County conveyance centers or any of the private recycling companies listed below.
